Workshop for Embassy of rejected refugees
The Palestinian camp outside the Jakob culture church in Oslo has been a political demonstration in the public domain. The camp has hosted 25 Palestinian asylum seekers who are threatened to be forcibly returned to Gaza, West Bank and the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Having been in existence for one year, the longest peaceful political demonstration in Norway, the camp was dismantled because the permit from the Oslo municipality went out on april 6th 2012. Both the district of Grünerløkka and Jakob culture church who owns the site wants the camp welcomed back, but it's not yet approved by the City Council of Oslo.
To persuade them Eriksen Skajaa Architects in cooperation with the Palestinian camp, Anti Racist Centre, Atelier Populaire Oslo and Oslo Kunsthall arranged a workshop at Kunsthall Oslo to get suggestions for how the Palestinian camp can be resurrected in a new and better form. The workshop discussed ideas on everything from what the camp can be, what the camp needs to communicate and its specific design. Now when it has been established we hope that the new camp will open up a wider debate on the Norwegian asylum policy!
